TogglePlanning your first trip to China can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially with the variety of experiences from the silk road to the jade dragon snow mountain! With its vast landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture, Mainland China offers a unique experience unlike any other. This travel guide is designed for travelers eager to explore China, highlighting the best places to visit for a perfect China itinerary that will guarantee unforgettable memories.
Introduction to Traveling in China
Why You Should Visit China as First-Time Black Travelers
What makes China such a compelling destination for first-time travelers? Well, for starters, the sheer scale of the country means there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re drawn to the bustling big cities like Beijing and Shanghai, or the serene beauty of places like Guilin, China offers a captivating mix of ancient history and modern marvels. China travel is more than just ticking off famous landmarks. It’s about immersing yourself in a vibrant beautiful culture that frankly gets a bad unfair perspective painted of it in the western world.Â
So whether you’re planning your next getaway or just curious about this amazing country, this blog offers the best tips and recommendations. It’s created with everyone in mind, but especially to empower fellow black travellers and people of color with honest insights from my own journey as I want you to visit it!
So what about coming to China as a black or person of color tourist? Well bottom line is that the experience will be memorable but challenging for a number of reasons. As a quite dark black man who has visited China on 5 separate occasions over recent years, I have no hesitation in highly recommending China to everyone regardless of your ethnicity.
The most important thing to however realise is that a tiny amount of foreign people actually still visit China because of pre-conceived ideas about the country. Therefore Chinese people are not very exposed to black people and people of color compared to caucasians, and you automatically stand out. People are naturally interested in you, which translates to looking at you and very often wanting to speak to you or take photos with you. This is done in the majority of cases from a friendly perspective, but to be frank you will experience some racism too. I loved being the centre of attention in the first 2 visits as I am a naturally friendly person, talking to and taking photos with people. However this may not be everyones comfort zone, and even if it is, it does get tiresome after a while.Â
Secondly there is a huge language barrier as English is not widely spoken and signs, restaurant menus etc are in mandarin, although Shanghai and Beijing are easier with more English signage etc in some places. I am fortunate that my wife is Chinese which obviously helped enormously. However with the explosion of very good translation apps in recent years, this is becoming a much easier thing to navigate around as I found out in my last trip when I spent more time travelling by myself.
So should you go? Absolutely you should! You will not regret the beauty of the country, warmth of people, and amazing food. You just need to plan well. As first time visitors my advice is that a visit in China would be much easier if you book a tour with a reputable company. This is more expensive than doing it yourself for sure, but for your first time just make it pain-free and enjoy it. This helps in dealing with navigation, eating etc and also gives you a bit of group protection as being part of a group rather than by yourself or as a couple, helps buffer some of that interest. Adventurous DIY explorers should certainly carry on and if possible go with at least one other person for that comfort buffer of being able to chat and share things with someone else who understands how you may be feeling in a situation. It will be easier to tour China independently the second time you go as you will have a better sense of how things are.

Overview of the Best Places to Visit in China
Narrowing down the best places to visit in China can feel like a daunting task with so many great places to choose from! I have therefore used my personal experience to suggest a list of top places that offer a diverse range of experiences and are easier to navigate around. A trip to China isn’t complete without seeing the Great Wall or exploring the terracotta army in Xi’an. Then there’s the national park scenic beauty of Guilin and the Li River, and watching giant pandas in a natural environment at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Mix in the bustling metropolis of Shanghai and Beijing and you have an itinerary offering a mix of historical sites, natural wonders, and vibrant city life.
Creating Your First Time China Itinerary
China is vast and creating your China itinerary depends on how much time you have and what you want to experience. When planning a trip to China, it’s wise to prioritize your must-see attractions. If you have only a few days in China, focus on one or two cities with Shanghai and Beijing being my tips. A longer China tour allows you to explore the diverse regions, venturing to Xi’an and Chengdu in  Western China. Deciding on the best time to travel is also important. Different seasons offer different experiences, from the cherry blossoms in spring to the vibrant autumn foliage. Remember to consider travel times between places when planning your China itinerary.
1. Exploring Beijing as Your First China Stop
The Forbidden City: A First Time in China Must Do
No trip to China, especially if it’s your first time in China, is complete without exploring Beijing, the capital of China. And when in Beijing, the Forbidden City is an absolute absolute must-see. This sprawling palace complex, once home to emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, offers a fascinating glimpse into China’s imperial past. Walking through its courtyards and halls, you can appreciate the history and importance of the complex. It’s one of the best places to visit in China to truly understand the country’s dynastic history. The most important thing to note is to make sure you allocate plenty of time for this visit, as the Forbidden City is vast and filled with fascinating details. It’s worth hiring a guide to enhance your experience and learn about the stories behind the walls.

Walk the Great Wall of China During Your Time in China
The Great Wall of China is one of the most impressive places to visit in China, and a visit to Beijing would be a disaster if you didn’t see it. It’s an engineering masterpiece and a well loved China national symbol of enduring strength. Several sections of the Great Wall are easily accessible from Beijing, making it a perfect day trip. Mutianyu, Jinshanling and Badaling are popular choices, with Mutianyu and Jinshanling offering stunning scenery and fewer crowds. Many visitors opt for a cable car ride to reach the wall, saving energy for exploring the ramparts. Walking along the Great Wall provides a unique experience and breathtaking views. Jinshanling first thing in morning after it opened was my favourite place in China, as the view and feeling of being with my friends the only 4 people on a long stretch of the wall for an hour was unforgettable.
Make sure to check the weather forecast before your visit as it is quite exposed on the wall. Also, be prepared for crowds, especially during peak season and China national holidays as that really spoils the whole experience.Â

Other Top Things to Do in Beijing
Beyond the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, Beijing is a great place to visit as it offers many other top things to do. Tiananmen Square, a huge public square with immense historical significance, is a must-see. The Summer Palace, with its beautiful gardens and Kunming Lake also provides a stunning peaceful retreat from the city. For a taste of local culture, explore the hutongs which are narrow alleyways lined with traditional courtyard houses. You can also indulge in the delicious Beijing cuisine, including the famous Peking duck. With so much to offer, Beijing is undoubtably a great place to visit.
As a black traveler or person of color, Beijing is easier to explore as people are more used to seeing foreigners and there are more opportunities to find restaurants with english menus etc. You don’t need a tour company travel guide to help you explore the main attractions inside the city. However i would recommend that you use a guide if you want to visit the Great Wall of China for convenience.
2. Shanghai: One of the Best Cities to Visit In The World
Must-See Attractions in Shanghai
If you are planning a trip to China, particularly your first time in China, Shanghai is one of the most exciting cities that you simply cannot miss. It’s a bustling metropolis, offering a nice contrast to Beijing’s historical charm, and shows off China’s modern vibrant side. One of the best places to visit on your first evening for sunset and twilight is The Bund, with its stunning skyline views. I was mesmerised for a couple of hours at least, just absorbing the views and ambience along the long promenade and you will too. A visit to Yuyuan Garden provides a wonderful peaceful escape and a unique traditional Chinese cultural experience. Exploring Nanjing Road, a shopper’s paradise, is also a fun thing to do. I love Shanghai as the fascinating blend of east and west cultures makes it a must-see city.Â

Cultural Experiences and Nightlife
Shanghai offers a wealth of cultural experiences and vibrant nightlife to enjoy. The French Concession is a great place to see with its charming streets and European architecture. If you are into the arts try one of the many museums including the amazing Shanghai Museum to delve into China’s rich history. As night falls, Shanghai transforms into a city with a vibrant nightlife. From busy fun shopping mall restaurants, to high street trendy restaurants, bars, and karaoke lounges, there’s something for everyone. I mentioned The Bund above at night, and a different way to see it is by taking a Huangpu River cruise for stunning night views of the skyline. You can easily fill 3/4 days exploring Shanghai’s unique blend of culture and modern life.
Best Places to Stay in Shanghai
Choosing the best places to stay in Shanghai depends on your budget and travel style. The Bund and the French Concession are popular choices for their central location and access to attractions. For budget travelers, consider hostels and guesthouses in the Jing’an District. If you’re looking for luxury, the Pudong area offers high-end hotels with spectacular views. When planning a trip to China, remember to book your accommodation in advance, especially during peak season. Shanghai offers accommodation options for every type of traveler, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable visit.
As a person of color or black adventurer, Shanghai is the easiest place to visit as I felt they are a bit more used to foreigners than in Beijing. I also found the taxi drivers in Shanghai to be more approachable than in Beijing, although in both places it’s better to use taxi apps rather than trying to flag down a taxi.Â
3. Guilin and the Li River: A Top Place to Go in China
Why Guilin is a Top Place to Visit in China
Wow oh wow oh wow! Trust me Guilin is one of the most beautiful places to visit in China with stunning natural scenery. I was hooked from the first views I got from my holiday window! The iconic karst mountains and the Li River create a picturesque landscape that repeateadly draws travelers from around the world. It’s an ideal location for people seeking a break from the 2 bustling cities, offering a chance to immerse yourself in China’s natural beauty. With its serene atmosphere and breathtaking views, Guilin is a top top place on any China itinerary, and you will leave with amazing memories.

Exploring the Scenic Li River
A Li River cruise is one of the highlights of any visit to Guilin, providing stunning riverside views of the surrounding national park. The cruise takes you through towering karst mountains, lush greenery, and charming villages. The Li River offers a truly unique experience, making it one of the top things to do in China, especially for families visiting the water town. Â The best time to travel for a Li River cruise is during the spring or autumn, when the weather is mild and the scenery is at its most vibrant.Â
Other activities in the Surrounding Areas
If you have a few days to spend in Guilin consider visiting the Longsheng Rice Terraces which offer stunning views of terraced fields carved into the mountainside. You could also explore Yangshuo, a town near Guilin, which is a popular base for outdoor activities like cycling and rock climbing.Â
For black travelers and people of color, you will receive a lot of attention in Guilin as they don’t see many people like us. As I said at the beginning, the attention is mostly friendly but be aware that you will be stared at etc. Also eating out is more challenging as very few places will have things in English, but just use your translation apps. Dont be put off by this though as the visual and cultural experience you will get by visiting Guilin far outweighs a bit of occasional discomfort, so go there!
We used a one on one China tour travel guide for our visit to Guilin and it was the best thing I did as they sorted out all the trips and transort making meaning we could just enjoy it! So my strong recommendation is do likewise.
4. Explore the Shaanxi Province Capital of Xi’an
Must-See Attractions in Xi’an
Xi’an in Shaanxi is a city in China where ancient history and a vibrant culture come together. Known as the starting point of the Silk Road, it’s home to some of the most unforgettable landmarks in China. Most people have heard of the legendary Terracotta Warriors and may have seen a few in a museum near them. Well imagine seeing them in their natural environment on a much larger scale! It was an experience I thoroughly enjoyed and I am sure you will too. Other attractions include the towering Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Ancient City Wall and the Drum and Bell Towers,Â

Go on a Culinary Adventure and Explore Local Street Food
Xi’an isn’t just famous for its ancient history – it’s also a food lover’s paradise. As the starting point of the Silk Road, the city’s cuisine reflects a rich mix of Chinese, Middle Eastern, and Central Asian influences. From hand-pulled biang biang noodles to flavorful lamb kebabs, spicy hot pot, and roujiamo (also known as Chinese hamburger), your taste buds will thank you for every bite you take. The Muslim Quarter is an especially wonderful place for an experience in China cuisine with buzzing food stalls offering freshly grilled skewers and sweet treats like persimmon cakes. Whether you’re eating in a local market or enjoying a family-style feast, the local cuisine of Xi’an is a must-try.Â
So what should you be aware of as a person of color or black tourist visiting this part of China? Xi’an probably sees a bit more foreigners than Guilin due to the worldwide appeal of the Terracotta Army. I found there was a little bit less staring than in Guilin, but again this was in the main natural curiosity. Translation apps use and warm smiles will get you far especially with the street stalls as they are usually naturally more engaging than restaurants. Like Guilin, I would also highly recommend arranging the Terracotta Warriors trip using a tour company as the only way to visit it is by private transport. We hired a taxi for the day to take us there and back, but that was easier because my wife spoke Mandarin and could book via an app.
5. A Panda China Tour in China for the First Time Tourist
Get Up Close with Giant Pandas in Their Natural Habitat
Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, is famous as the home of China’s most iconic animal. the giant panda. A visit to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these gentle creatures up close in a peaceful, natural environment. The center is dedicated to the conservation and study of giant pandas, housing both adult pandas and playful cubs. Visitors can stroll through lush bamboo groves and watch the pandas eat, play, and nap in specially designed enclosures. With educational exhibits, tranquil gardens, and daily feeding sessions, it was one of the most heartwarming and memorable experiences in China on my first visit. If you’re planning a trip to Chengdu, this is a must-see attraction whatever your age.
Best Time to Visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding?
The best time to visit the is during the cooler months of September to November or March to May, when the pandas are most active and the weather is pleasant. Early mornings, especially around 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., are ideal to catch feeding time and see the pandas at their liveliest before they settle in for midday naps. Summer can be hot and crowded, while winter sees fewer tourists but may limit panda activity outdoors. As usual avoid visiting during Chinese national holidays for a more relaxed experience.Â
