Travel Tips for Black Travellers
Whether you’re planning your next getaway or just curious about Kotor, this blog offers the best tips and recommendations. It’s created with everyone in mind, but especially to empower fellow black travellers and people of color with honest insights from my own personal journey as a black man. Europe has changed and the days of feeling apprehensive in visiting some countries is thankfully getting better. Visiting Kotor is one of the best things I have done over the past couple of years, and I am glad I took the plunge to explore it. So first and foremost, as a black traveller or person of color you have nothing to worry about as you will be warmly welcomed by the lovely people of Montenegro. I never experienced any issues during my travels, and felt completely safe throughout.
However, respect and warmth requires you to express the same to others, so reflect these qualities to others and you will have a great time. So with that in mind, lets start exploring the wonderful places you can enjoy in your time in Montenegro.
Top Things to Do in Old Town Kotor
1. The Sea, North and South Gates of the Old Town of Kotor
The Sea Gate is the main entrance to Kotor Old Town, dating back to the 16th century and still standing strong today. To the north of the old town, you’ll find the North or River Gate crossing the Skurda River which flows from the mountains. The South Gate (also known as Vrata od Gurdicа or Gurdic Gate), the oldest of the three was initially constructed in the 9th century and makes it easy to walk from the old town to the marina area. Walking through and viewing these historic gates to explore different parts of Old Town of Kotor is one of the must things to do in Kotor. The designs of the gates provide insights into the history of Kotor and are essential stops in any guide to Kotor providing a great starting point for anyone trying to see in Kotor in one day.

It’s a lovely stroll and among the many fun things to do around Kotor especially for sunset and early evening when the walls are lit.

Although not one of the Roman Catholic cathedrals in Montenegro, it plays an important role in the town’s religious diversity. It’s a peaceful attraction to consider when planning places to see in Kotor and reflects the rich religious history of the Old City. You can also visit the nearby Kotor bazaar, a small market of local shops selling souvenirs and handicrafts to remember your trip to Kotor.

10. Church of Our Lady of Remedy for Scenic Views of Kotor Bay
Perched above Kotor Old Town, the Church of Our Lady of Remedy is an attractive stone church built on the mountainside overseeing Kotor. Dating back to 1518 it is reached by walking up part of of the San Giovanni Fortress or Ladder of Kotor trail, and can be seen from most locations in Kotor.
The journey is uphill and takes some time though not overly stressful if you pace yourself. Reaching the church is one of the most rewarding things to do and see with spectacular panoramic views and some of the best views of the whole Kotor Bay.
Please note that you need a head for heights if you want to climb even to this midpoint of the trail. I am not great with heights so this was as high up as I went on my visit to Kotor.

11. San Giovanni or Ladder of Kotor trail
The Ladder of Kotor trail to San Giovanni or Kotor Fortress is apparently one of the most exhilarating hikes you’ll take in Montenegro. I say apparently because going that high up was well past my comfort zone so I didn’t get the opportunity to experience in person what a lot of people have said. It does involve climbing nearly 1,350 steep steps uphill to be rewarded with amazing views of the bay and city of Kotor.
It’s often listed among the best things to see in Kotor, especially if on a Montenegro road trip or riding from Kotor to nearby trails, so don’t miss out if heights isn’t a problem for you.

12. Castle of San Giovanni
The Castle of San Giovanni (also called St John or Kotor Fortress) crowns the fortress walk and marks one of the top Kotor attractions. Its crumbling walls and ancient lookout points offer dramatic photo opportunities and unmatched views of the Kotor Bay and Old CIty.
Standing on the San Giovanni Hill, it was originally built in 531 and is a historical landmark that is visible across Kotor. As in the the section above, this is an adventure for people who are fine with heights and have a fair degree of fitness as it involves walking up steep steps with a number of zigzagging turns. However It’s worth the effort if you’re looking for the best views and enjoy hiking.

13. Kotor Bay Promenade
Stretching along Kotor Bay next to the Old Town, is the long tranquil Kotor Bay Promenade which is perfect for a relaxed scenic walk from the Old Town. Kotor Bay is one of the most beautiful bays I have visited, and walking close to it along this promenade provides a peaceful escape especially at sunset, with views of boats bobbing in the water.
This is one of the many fun things to do if you have more time to explore Kotor Old City, either taking a slow stroll or stopping for drinks or a meal at one of the restaurants and bars along the way.Â

14. Kotor Cable Car
The Kotor Cable Car is a thrilling way to get a bird’s-eye view of the beauty of Kotor and the surrounding mountains. It’s one of the newest attractions, offering a unique panoramic view of the bay and beyond. Great for all ages, this ride is the best way to see the Kotor landscape from different vertical perspectives, and to enjoy sunset from the cable car upper station.
If you’re starting a Montenegro itinerary, the cable car is a fun way to kick things off after you arrived in Kotor, or as cool way to enjoy sunset. A head for heights is required to fully enjoy the 11 minute car ride. However for people less comfortable with cable cars, the good news is that you can instead take a taxi from the town to the cable car upper station to get those amazing panoramic views. Taking a ride in the cable car was one of the highlights of my time in Kotor, even though I am not comfortable with heights.

Best Day Trips from Kotor
Day Trip to Perast
Kotor is the perfect base for exploring other interesting locations in Montenegro. AÂ day trip from Kotor to Perast is an absolute must. This charming coastal town north of Kotor is just a short distance away, and is an idyllic escape known for old architecture and a serene atmosphere. One of the best things to do in Perast is to take a ferry boat to visit the islands of Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George.Â
It is one of the easiest day trips you can take from Kotor either by taxi, bus or river boat cruise. The tranquil ambiance, seaside dining, and fantastic Perast mountain backdrop made it one of the best things I did when visiting Montenegro.
Excursion Around Kotor to Lovćen National Park
For a day trip tour from Kotor that combines nature and history, consider an excursion to Lovćen National Park. This park offers breathtaking panoramic views of Montenegro’s landscape. Hike to the top of Mount Lovćen to visit the NjegoÅ¡ Mausoleum, the final resting place of Petar II Petrović-NjegoÅ¡, a revered Montenegrin poet and ruler. The drive to the park is an adventure in itself with winding roads offering panoramic vistas. This is one of the best places to visit in Montenegro and a must if you have a few days to explore Kotor, as it is a long day trip.
Please note that the mountain top walks to the mausoleum and panorama viewing point are exposed on either side of the walkway and you therefore need to be comfortable with heights. I somehow managed to do the mausoleum walk after many minutes of self calming and was glad I did. I however couldn’t quite bring myself to do the panorama viewing point but highly recommend it for people who can.Â
Exploring the Bay of Kotor
There are numerous ways to explore the Bay of Kotor beyond just Kotor itself. Consider one of the many boat trip day tour that takes you to various towns and villages around Kotor, such as Tivat and Herceg Novi. Each coastal town offers its unique charm and attractions. Boat tours are also a fantastic way to see the Bay of Kotor from a different perspective, allowing you to appreciate its beauty fully. A boat tour trip to Kotor will certainly leave you with unforgettable memories, and I loved every minute of the ones we did.
Other Day Trip Things To Do In Kotor If You Have A Few Days
Also consider the following places in Montenegro if you are spending a few days in Kotor. These are more long day trips but worth exploring including exploring Herceg Novi and its fortress, Lake Skadar with its gorgeous mountainous seascape backdrop, and breathtaking Durmitor National Park. Where to Eat in Kotor
Best Restaurants in the Old Town
The Old Town of Kotor boasts a variety of restaurants that cater to all tastes. From traditional Montenegrin cuisine to international dishes, you’ll find plenty of options to satisfy your cravings. Many of the restaurants are located in charming squares or along narrow streets, offering a delightful atmosphere for dining. There are also many delightful restaurants and bars along the scenic Kotor Bay Promenande waiting for you to pop in. Be sure to try some seafood dishes – they are among the best things to eat!
Local Cuisine to Try
While you stay in Kotor, don’t miss the opportunity to try some authentic Montenegrin dishes like sarma which is cabbage leaves stuffed with minced meat and rice, or a delicious lamb in milk dish or a seafood buzara or stew. Another firm Montenegrin snack favourite is börek or burek a filo pastry or pie with a variety of fillings, such as meat, cheese, spinach, or potatoes. Tasting local food whilst sitting in the old square at night is one of the best things to do during your visit.
Where to Stay in Kotor
Accommodation Options in Kotor
When you plan to stay in Kotor, you’ll discover a range of accommodation options to suit various budgets and preferences. From lovely hotels with stunning views of Kotor Bay to cozy guesthouses tucked away in the Old Town, you’ll find something for everyone. Consider staying in the Old Town if you want to be as near as possible to the main attractions. If you prefer higher views of beautiful Kotor Bay and don’t mind walking uphill get a guesthouse that is on the hillside. That was my preference and I didn’t regret sitting on my balcony watching sunset or sunrise across the bay. If you don’t like walking uphill and want to enjoy the low level look and waves of Kotor Bay, go for a hotel or guesthouse near the Kotor Bay Promenade. As always one of the best things to find a good place is to do your research and read all reviews before booking.
Best Time to Visit Kotor
Seasonal Highlights
The best time to visit depends on your preferences for weather and crowds. Summer (June-August) is the peak season, with warm weather and plenty of events. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer pleasant weather with fewer tourists and are the best times to visit. Winter (November-March) is the off-season, with cooler temperatures and a quieter atmosphere and is still a good time. I went in September which was warm with occasional rain and not busy, and in December which was pleasant as not very cold and again not busy.
